LANDED COST FOR SPARE PARTS

Price the part,
and the wait.

Estimate goods and freight for spare parts. Industrial parts are dense and high in value per kilogram, which makes air freight defensible in a way it never is for consumer goods.

How the landed cost of spare parts is worked out

Why air freight is defensible here

Industrial spare parts are dense, low in volume and high in value per kilogram. A three-kilogram part that stops a production line is not the same purchase as three kilograms of mugs, and the freight arithmetic should not be made as though it were.

Where the time goes

  • Quoting: 1–3 days with a complete drawing, a week or more without one.
  • Sampling: 5–10 days for machined parts, 2–3 weeks where tooling is involved.
  • Production: 5–15 days for machined parts, longer for cast or moulded.
  • Export: 3–7 days by air, 25–45 by sea.

What drives the unit price

A machined part costs mostly setup, and setup is the same whether you make one piece or fifty. CNC setup dominates below roughly 20 pieces.

Injection moulded parts need tooling that runs into the thousands of renminbi, so the practical floor is 500–1,000 pieces unless you machine or print instead.

Common questions

Why is one piece so expensive?
A machined part costs mostly setup: programming, fixturing and a first article. That cost is the same whether you make one or fifty, so the useful question is where the per-unit price stops falling.
Is it cheaper to order a life’s worth?
Often. If a part fails annually and the machine has five years left, five pieces at one setup cost far less than five setups.
Does the calculator read my drawing or listing?
No. The estimate is built from the description, quantity and price you enter. The goods price for a part made to a drawing comes from a shop’s quote.
